Driving abroad

What should I know about the international driving license ?

The international driving license:

  • allows foreign authorities to translate and understand the data on your Swiss license;
  • is only valid as a complement to your national credit card format driving license;
  • can be requested from the traffic office in your canton of residence;
  • is valid for 3 years.

In the EU and EFTA states, the Swiss driving license in credit card format should be accepted automatically.

If you still have an old blue driving license, it is recommended that you exchange it for the new one (credit card format, called “PCC”) at the OCV (Cantonal Vehicle Office) as it may not be recognised abroad.

Before going abroad, you must check with the appropriate consulate or your travel agency!
